常春藤盟校常春藤聯盟Ivy League)成立於1954年,是由美國東北部地區的8所私立大學組成的聯盟。這8所學校有著許多共同的特點:它們都是美國名校、也是美國產生最多羅德獎學金得主的大學聯盟。此外它們也是美國歷史悠久的大學:8所學校中的7所是在英國殖民時期建立的殖民地學院。常春藤盟校包括:布朗大學哥倫比亞大學康奈爾大學達特茅斯學院哈佛大學賓夕法尼亞大學普林斯頓大學耶魯大學

所有的常春藤盟校都是私立大學,和公立大學一樣,它們同時接受政府資助和私人捐贈,用於學術研究。例如常春藤之一的康乃爾大學就有4所學院是完全由政府支持的。由於美國公立大學享有政府的巨額撥款[1],私立大學的財政支出和研究經費要低於公立大學。[2]

歷史

各自成立年代

備註:成立日期和宗教聯繫都是根據各大學校方資料搜集。由於學校內部變遷過程複雜,很難有明確說法。現在各常青藤大學均宣稱與宗教無關。

常春藤聯盟最早指的是非正式的大學美式足球賽事,起源於1900年,當年耶魯大學捧得首個冠軍。多年來美國陸軍學院(西點軍校)和空軍學院也曾參加過常春藤的美式足球比賽,但是在聯盟正式成立前不久退出。

稱謂的源起

1936年,體育專欄作家John Kieran就注意到哈佛大學賓夕法尼亞大學普林斯頓大學耶魯大學哥倫比亞大學康奈爾大學達特茅斯學院的校刊學生編輯們在提倡建立一個頂級學院的體育競賽協會,以代表社會精英群體。1937年紐約的《先驅論壇報》首次用長在牆上的常春藤的比喻來形容這些參加美式足球比賽的學校;1945年8所大學的體育教練們簽署了首個常春藤協議,為8支參賽的美式足球隊設立了學術財政運動標準。1954年這項協議被擴展到其他所有運動,該年也被認為是常春藤聯盟正式成立的年份。

在此稱謂之前

八所常青藤學校中有七所的成立時間早於美國獨立戰爭;另外一所康奈爾大學是在南北內戰結束後很短時間內建立的。前七所學校幾乎是美國東海岸和中部殖民地的主要高等教育的人才貢獻學校;幾乎其他之後建立的學校都是由他們七所學校早期的教員和董事會出來建立;當然也有一部分英籍的畢業生和學者,主要來自劍橋大學牛津大學相對較少,也有愛丁堡大學及其他學校。美國僅次於最早的哈佛的第二古老大學威廉和瑪麗大學就是由愛丁堡大學的畢業生建立的。1766年建立的新澤西州立大學(羅格斯大學)創始人幾乎全是常青藤畢業生。現在美國西海岸最好的斯坦福大學建校之初的教員和董事會則幾乎全是康奈爾大學教員,包括其第一任校長David Starr JordanDavid Starr Jordan。而美國西海岸最著名的加州大學系統的主要創始人則都是來自耶魯大學,因此就連第一所學校的主色系都是耶魯的代表色藍色再加上加州聞名的金色[7]

作為同一個學術標準集團,常青藤聯盟幾乎擁有一致的新教徒「語調」。殖民時期紐約的英格蘭教會國王學院在獨立戰爭中分裂,並被改革為無宗派的哥倫比亞大學。在19世紀早期,儘管克爾文派牧師都是由宗教團體培養的,但是每個常青藤學校仍然有很強的宗教控制成分,比如每個學校都強制的禮拜活動一直延續到20世紀才終止。賓州大學和布朗大學雖然建立之初是以非宗教學校建立的,但是比如布朗的董事會卻是22個浸信會教徒、5個貴格會教徒、4個公理會教徒和5個聖公會教徒。唯一只有康奈爾大學保持了非宗教的獨立性,即便如此,校園內的多個教堂也是主要建築。

「常青藤聯盟」因此也像華斯普(WASP,意譯為盎格魯撒克遜白人新教徒,是今天構成美國上流社會的絕大部分)這種稱謂一樣,成了一種精英階層的代名詞。不過,其中的康奈爾大學一直在平等方面走在前列,康奈爾是美國第一批明確在錄取標準中反對種族和性別歧視,並且是第一批從建校就接收少數民族和女性的學校,直到現在仍然是平等方面的楷模。直到19世紀60年代,除了康奈爾大學以外,其他學校都是僅招收男性學員的,最晚的哥倫比亞在1983才開始和女性大學聯合辦學引入了女性。常人對於這種稱謂的感覺[8]最早可以追溯到1935年。[9]小說[10]和回憶錄[11]中反過來又加強了常人的對於其白人精英的感覺;儘管不是對每個學校都適用。

二戰後,這些常青藤學校開始逐漸放鬆了對於學員招收的(人種和性別)標準。他們雖然有美國最好的教員,最早的一批博士教授,但是他們逐漸發現他們不可能同時是世界一流的研究機構和蟬聯美國大學運動榜首;並且部分學校還經歷了所有其他主要賽事一樣的「醜聞」[12]。學校開始分別招收體育特長生和研究性學生。

想進入常春藤盟校的學生都要經過層層選拔,競爭激烈。自2000年起,每所學校的錄取率從6%到16%不等,被錄取的學生則來自世界各地,其中來自新英格蘭地區(美國的東北部)的學生占了大多數。[22][23][24]

不僅如此,常春藤盟校還走出了許許多多的諾貝爾獎得主(包括諾貝爾經濟學獎),以下列舉的是獲獎人數最多的學校:哈佛大學有153人,是全球諾貝爾獲獎人數最多的大學;其次是哥倫比亞大學,101人;耶魯大學52人,康奈爾大學45人,普林斯頓大學37人,賓夕法尼亞大學29人。[29]值得一提的是,獲獎的人數都是由各個大學自行公布出來的,因為每所學校對於哪些人可以算是本校獲獎者,哪些人不是,都有自己的統計規則。比如,具有學士學位的校友、在校教職工、已離職的教職工、客座講師,或者兼職講師等。其實很多大學名副其實的獲獎者沒有所公布的那麼多,但是為了充人數,還是會想盡辦法使獲獎者與本校扯上各種各樣的關係。[來源請求]

合作與聯誼

各個成員學校之間的合作與聯誼是由常春藤學生自治組織——常春藤聯盟學生理事會(Ivy Council)主導的,活動在每年的春、秋兩季舉辦,每所學校都會派出代表前來參加。在活動中,每所學校的管理層都會討論學校日常事務、或發起活動與倡議。

校園文化

風尚與生活方式

多年以來,不同的時尚潮流與流派從常春藤盟校中一直不斷地湧現出來。比如服裝文化,常見的有校服棒球服POLO衫高爾夫運動裝、夏季服裝、休閒服PreppyPreppy款式等,這些服裝的設計發祥於英美上流社會,並不斷演變,流行至今。而時任美國總統約翰·肯尼迪也是一位常春藤式服裝的追隨者。

Preppy流行服裝文化出現時間大約是從1912年至1940、50年代之間,發祥於美國學院傳統文化,及其塑造的Preppy次文化。這種款式的服裝就被稱為常春藤風格。[30]「J. Press」(最早在美國耶魯大學內營業的裁縫店)所製作的服裝就代表了典型的Preppy風格。到了二十世紀中期,「J. Press」和另一家裁縫店「Brooks Brothers」正式引領了Preppy服飾的時尚潮流,並在聯盟內學校開設了多家分店,其中包括哈佛大學普林斯頓大學耶魯大學

社會精英主義

人們經常會把常春藤盟校與西方國家顯貴人士、美國上流社會華斯普群體聯繫在一起。雖然常春藤盟校的學生都來自家境優越的上級階層,也往往來自新英格蘭,但目前的學生群體無論在家庭經濟條件方面,還是種族、地域方面,都呈現了多樣化的趨勢[33][34][35][36]。學校也設有專門的補助金項目以資助那些家境不太好的學生。但有數據表明,在校生中的寒門子弟仍然是少數。[37][38][39]

成為美國總統的校友

迄今為止,44名曾擔任美國總統的人士中,就有16名是畢業於常春藤盟校的。有8名總統是從哈佛大學畢業,5名從耶魯大學畢業,3名(其中兩名獲得榮譽學位)從哥倫比亞大學畢業,2名從普林斯頓大學畢業,還有7名肄業,其中有3名是轉校生:唐納·川普總統從福坦莫大學(Fordham University)轉至賓夕法尼亞大學,奧巴馬總統從洛杉磯西方學院(Occidental College)轉至哥倫比亞大學,而約翰·肯尼迪總統從聯盟內的普林斯頓大學轉至哈佛大學。而美國總統中第一個從常春藤盟校畢業的是約翰·亞當斯,1755年從哈佛大學畢業。

地理分布

常春藤的學生很多都來自美國的東北部地區,特別是紐約波士頓,以及費城地區。因為常春藤的八所學校都坐落於東北部,所以大多數學生從學校畢業之後就在東北部工作、生活,這也不足為奇。哈佛大學2013年發布的調查指出,42%來自東北部地區的學生,和55%的全體學生都計劃在東北部定居。一直以來,紐約波士頓是畢業生工作生活的首選之地。[43][44][45][46][47]

捐贈

由於其悠久的歷史和所培養出的精英人材,常春藤盟校獲得校友大量的私人捐款,8所常春藤盟校收到的捐款總值都超過10億美元。其中哈佛大學的捐款總額超過300億美元,是全球獲得私人捐贈最多的大學;耶魯大學列第二,捐款總額超過200億美元。
