1909年開始參加電影拍攝，導演格里菲斯的許多早期作品如《紐約的帽子》(1912)等他都扮演重要角色。他也為格里菲斯寫過《善良的孩子》(1913)等電影劇本。1915年白珍珠主演的兩套連集片《伊萊恩歷險記》和《伊萊恩的愛情》他都參加了演出，同時萊昂納爾·巴里摩爾也為其他電影公司拍片，偶爾客串導演。

演藝經歷
他出身美國著名的舞台世家，是著名演員莫里斯·巴里摩爾和喬治亞娜·德魯的長子，自幼受到家庭戲劇教育的薰陶，少年時期便登上舞台，二十二歲時就成了百老匯的主要演員，經常同他舅父約翰·德魯同台演出。萊昂納爾·巴里摩爾一直把主要精力放在舞台事業上，1925年他終於決定改行，全身心投入到電影事業上。次年他同米高梅影片公司簽訂合約，此後，為該公司工作二十七年之久。初扮主角，也導演過影片，後來改成性格演員，仍有明星地位。三、四十年代是他作品的多產期，一生拍了二百五十多部影片，飾演了各式各樣的人物。從1929至1931年，他為米高梅影片公司導演了五部影片，在《某夫人》 (1929)這部早期有聲片中，他第一個採用移動式麥克風，這部影片也使他獲得1929年第二屆奧斯卡最佳導演金像獎提名。1931年，他以影片《自由花》獲得第四屆奧斯卡最佳男主角金像獎。1933年，他同弟弟約翰、妹妹埃塞爾一同主演了描寫舊俄宮闈秘聞的《拉斯蒲丁》，這也是他們兄弟、妹妹在銀幕上僅有的一次合作。
