塑膠材料是一種以聚合物為基本成分，加入添加劑後在一定溫度、壓力下，經加工塑製成型或交聯固化成型而得的固體材料。由於多數聚合物具有良好的絕緣性能，它被廣泛用作絕緣材料。塑膠按熱行為分為熱塑性與熱固性兩類。
