切萨皮克湾海战（Battle of the Chesapeake），又称维吉尼亚角战役（Battle of the Virginia Capes）或简称海角战役（Battle of the Capes），它是美国独立战争期间的一场海军战役。[1]
简介
海战发生在1781年9月5日，德·葛拉瑟伯爵指挥的法国舰队在切萨皮克湾附近对抗由汤玛斯·葛瑞夫斯率领的英国舰队。海战开始时，法拉叶侯爵请求刺客康纳率领天鹰号支援法军。德·葛拉瑟伯爵原以为会有一支大型舰队和一位身经百战的船长加入他们，但没想到来的却只有一艘船和一个毫不起眼的年轻人。
德·葛拉瑟伯爵又惊又气，他命令马塞洛斯号和圣埃斯普利特号去做天鹰号的护卫舰。在战斗中，三艘英军炮舰和至少四艘英军护卫舰被击沉，马塞洛斯号也在中途被英军击中沉没。
随后，巴夫勒尔号加入了针对圣埃斯普利特号的战斗，并打爆了天鹰号的螺旋炮。康纳决定孤注一掷，他下令撞击巴夫勒尔号，强行登船。在登船后的白刃战中，康纳杀死了巴夫勒尔号的船长。整场战役以法军的胜利告终。
切萨皮克湾海战被认为是美国独立战争中最具决定性的战役，它不仅打破了英军对殖民地的海域封锁，也击败了来援助英军将领查尔斯·康沃利斯的军队，导致了英军在约克镇围城战中的失败。英军在约克镇战役中的失败也导致了两年后《巴黎和约》的签订。
事件过程
针对1781年7月在纽约或维吉尼亚攻击英国军队的选项，海军上将葛拉瑟选择了后者，八月底葛拉瑟的舰队抵达切萨皮克。法国海军上将德·巴拉斯在得知葛拉瑟已经从西印度群岛航行到北美后，也从纽波特罗德岛基地出航。
葛瑞夫斯推测两支法国舰队将于切萨皮克湾会合。他带领19艘船从纽约往南航行，9月5日葛瑞夫斯在切萨皮克湾遇见葛拉瑟停泊的舰队，葛拉瑟急忙指挥24艘船舰迎战。经过两小时的接合和移动，两个舰队并没有完全排成战列，只有前面和中心部分跟直线完全接合，虽然在战术上双方均未能获得决定性胜利，但对英军来讲这是他们战略上的重挫。
因为英军无法支援或撤离约克镇中由查尔斯·康沃利斯将军所指挥的英军。当法国海军能够暂时控制海面，由美军及法国步兵连同火炮、攻城器抵达约克镇支援，对约克镇围城战役有著决定性影响。
