Early Life
Travis Scott was born Jacques Bermon Webster II in Houston, Texas. From ages one to six, he lived with his grandmother in Houston's South Park, a neighborhood he described as a tough environment that shaped his outlook and drive. He later moved to the middle-class suburb of Missouri City to live with his parents. His father is a soul musician and entrepreneur, while his mother worked for Apple.
Scott graduated from Elkins High School at seventeen, where he also participated in musical theater. He then attended the University of Texas at San Antonio but dropped out during his second year to pursue his music career full-time, a decision that initially caused friction with his parents.
He derived his stage name from a combination of his favorite uncle, Travis, and the first name of his idol Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi).
Career
2008–2012: Career Beginnings
Scott began his music career in 2008, forming a duo called The Graduates with a friend. In 2009, he formed the group The Classmates, which released several projects before disbanding in late 2012. After dropping out of college, he moved to New York City and then Los Angeles to pursue music, facing periods of homelessness and financial difficulty. His breakthrough came when Atlanta rapper T.I. heard one of his productions and invited him to a studio session, leading to a record deal with T.I.'s Grand Hustle Records in 2013. He also signed a publishing deal with Kanye West's GOOD Music label and appeared on the label's Cruel Summer compilation in 2012.
2013–2016: Breakthrough with Owl Pharaoh, Rodeo, and Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight
In 2013, Scott released his debut mixtape, Owl Pharaoh, which garnered attention and a nomination for Best Mixtape at the BET Hip Hop Awards. This was followed by his second mixtape, Days Before Rodeo, in 2014. His debut studio album, Rodeo (2015), was a critical and commercial success, spawning the hit single "Antidote," which reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Scott's second album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (2016), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
2017–2020: Astroworld, Cactus Jack, and Chart Dominance
In 2017, Scott founded his own record label, Cactus Jack Records, which signed artists like Don Toliver and Sheck Wes. He also released a collaborative album with Quavo under the name Huncho Jack. His monumental third album, Astroworld (2018), was a critical and commercial phenomenon. It became his second consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200 and yielded his first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, "Sicko Mode" (featuring Drake). In 2019, he performed at the Super Bowl LIII halftime show and released the number-one single "Highest in the Room". In 2020, he continued his streak of number-one debuts with "The Scotts" (with Kid Cudi) and "Franchise" (featuring Young Thug and M.I.A.), making him the first artist to have three songs debut at number one in less than a year. He also performed a groundbreaking virtual concert within the video game Fortnite.
2021–Present: Astroworld Tragedy, Utopia, and Comeback
In November 2021, a fatal crowd crush occurred during Scott's performance at his Astroworld Festival in Houston, resulting in ten deaths and hundreds of injuries. The event led to widespread controversy, lawsuits, and a period of relative silence from Scott. After a hiatus of nearly five years since his previous solo album, Scott released his fourth studio album, Utopia, in 2023. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, had a star-studded guest list including Beyoncé, Drake, and The Weeknd, and was supported by the number-one single "Fein". In 2025, he released the single "4x4," which also peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100.
