Thaneth Warakulnukroh (Thai: ธเนศ วรากุลนุเคราะห์; born September 9, 1958) is a veteran Thai singer, songwriter, record producer, DJ, and actor. A highly respected figure in the Thai entertainment industry, he is renowned as a pioneer of progressive rock music in Thailand . After a successful but decades-long career as a musician and producer, he experienced a significant career resurgence as an actor, gaining international recognition and critical acclaim for his poignant performances in films such as Bad Genius (2017) and Pop Aye (2017) .

Early life and education

Thaneth Warakulnukroh was born on September 9, 1958, in Samut Songkhram province, Thailand . Details about his early education are not widely publicized.[1]

Music career

Thaneth began his career in the music industry in 1983 as a radio DJ for the label Nitespot, which subsequently signed him as an artist later that same year . His debut album, Dan Civilize (Civilized Land Beyond the Horizon), was released in 1985. The album is considered one of the first progressive rock albums ever recorded in the Thai language and quickly gained a devoted cult following for its avant-garde style, featuring complex guitar riffs and synth-rock beats .

He followed this with his second album, Kon Kien Pleng Bun Leng Chi Wit (The Writer of Life), in 1987. This album saw him experiment further with the concept album format . While critically respected, his second album did not achieve the same level of commercial success as his debut .

In 1989, Thaneth signed with the major record label GMM Grammy, marking a shift towards a more commercialized sound. His albums from this period, Kod Pum (Press the Button) in 1989 and Rock Kra Tob Mai (Wood Strikes Rock) in 1992, successfully balanced artistic integrity with mainstream popularity, producing several classic hits that remain beloved in Thailand .

Music Bugs and producing

In 1996, Thaneth founded his own independent record label, Music Bugs Company, seeking greater creative freedom. While he intended to focus on his own music, he found great success as a producer, nurturing and launching the careers of some of Thailand's most successful rock bands. Through Music Bugs, he produced the first albums for bands including Bodyslam, Big Ass, Labanoon, and Friday, playing a pivotal role in shaping the modern Thai rock scene for over a decade . He retired from running the record company in 2006 to dedicate time to raising his family .

Return to music

After a 23-year hiatus from releasing his own music, Thaneth made a highly anticipated return in 2015 with his fifth studio album, Phloe (or Plœ). The ambitious concept album featured more than 30 songs and was released through his new label, Rock Opera House Records . He launched the album with two major concerts, "Thaneth Warakulnukroh : Phloe the Concert," in October 2015, featuring performances by a new generation of Thai artists he had influenced, such as Thanachai Ujjin (Modern Dog), Artiwara "Toon" Kongmalai (Bodyslam), and members of Big Ass and Labanoon .

Acting career

Although he appeared in a couple of films in the 1980s, including Trouble Makers (1986) and Fallen Angel (1986), Thaneth's acting career remained a minor part of his professional life for many years . This changed dramatically in 2017 when he took on two pivotal roles that established him as a formidable dramatic actor.

He first starred as the lead, Thana, in the critically acclaimed Singaporean-Thai road movie Pop Aye. His performance as a disillusioned Bangkok architect who reunites with his childhood elephant was praised by international critics for its subtlety and depth .

Later that same year, he delivered a widely celebrated performance as the caring but conflicted single father of the main character in the blockbuster heist thriller Bad Genius. His nuanced portrayal of a father struggling to connect with his gifted daughter earned him the Best Supporting Actor award at the 27th Thailand National Film Association Awards (Subhanahongsa Awards) . Critics lauded his ability to convey complex paternal emotions, with many considering his performance one of the film's standout elements .

Following this late-career breakthrough, Thaneth has remained active in both film and television. His notable subsequent roles include appearances in the fantasy drama Homestay (2018), the family drama series In Family We Trust (2018), the Netflix series Thai Cave Rescue (2022), where he played Governor Narongsak, and the comedy series Mad Unicorn (2025) .

Personal life

Thaneth Warakulnukroh is known to be a family-oriented person. He took a 13-year hiatus from his music career to raise his son, returning to the industry only after his son was old enough .
