2018年，一項基因研究發現，就在1859年之前，分佈廣泛的歐洲牧羊犬產生了德國牧羊犬，法國伯傑·皮卡德和五個意大利牧羊犬品種：貝爾加馬斯科牧羊犬，甘蔗Paratore，Lupino del Gigante，Pastore d ' 奧羅帕（Oropa）和Pastore della Lessinia e del Lagorai。
