Katy Wix (born 28 February 1980) is a Welsh actress, writer, author and artist. She is best known for her television roles as Carole in Stath Lets Flats, Mary in Ghosts, Jules in Big Boys, and Daisy in Not Going Out . She has also written and starred in her own sketch show Anna & Katy and the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Bird Island .

Early Life and Education

Wix was born in Pontypridd, Wales, and grew up in Peterston-super-Ely, near Cardiff . Both of her parents were actors before transitioning to arts administration and stage management respectively . She attended the University of Warwick in Coventry before studying drama at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama . During her studies, she entered the Funny Women comedy competition, where she met comedian Anna Crilly; the two later performed together as a comedy duo .[1]

Career

Acting

Wix's breakthrough role came in 2007 when she joined the cast of the BBC sitcom Not Going Out as Daisy, initially as a recurring character before becoming a regular cast member until 2015 . In 2009, she played Rhiannon Davies, the sister of Ianto Jones, in the Torchwood mini-series Children of Earth . She also portrayed various characters in Horrible Histories from 2009 to 2011, and appeared in Miranda, Outnumbered, and Absolutely Fabulous .

From 2018, she played Carole in the BAFTA-winning Channel 4 comedy Stath Lets Flats . Her role as Mary, one of the main ghosts in the BBC One sitcom Ghosts (2019–2022), became one of her most recognized performances; she described Mary as "such a playful role" that allowed her to explore the character's unpredictable and often violent tendencies . She also appeared as Barbara in Ted Lasso and Jules in the Channel 4 comedy Big Boys .

Wix was a contestant on series 9 of Taskmaster in 2019, finishing third . She has appeared in The Windsors as Sarah Ferguson (Fergie) and in an episode of Sherlock as Nurse Cornish .

Writing

Wix co-wrote and starred in the Channel 4 sketch show Anna & Katy alongside Anna Crilly . She wrote two series of her own sitcom for BBC Radio 4 titled Bird Island . She has also published two books of comic monologues for women .

In 2021, she published her first work of non-fiction, Delicacy: A Memoir of Cake and Death, which explores themes of loss, grief, eating disorders, body image, and love. The memoir is structured with each chapter named after a cake or pastry . It was named in The Guardian's best paperbacks of the month and received critical acclaim .

Art

Wix is also a visual artist. In 2017, her painting was selected for the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition .

Personal Life

Wix has spoken publicly about being autistic, as is her brother . She has also discussed her recovery from an eating disorder and the grief she experienced following the deaths of her best friend, her father, and her mother within a short period, which inspired her to write Delicacy . She was involved in a car accident at age 26 and later underwent gallbladder removal surgery during filming of Taskmaster .
