Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (born February 26, 1980) is an Icelandic actor. He is known for his roles in international television series such as Game of Thrones, Vikings: Valhalla, and Succession, as well as films including Atomic Blonde and Alpha.

Early Life and Education

Jóhannes was born and raised in Iceland and spent part of his childhood living in the Faroe Islands with his mother. He is fluent in Icelandic, Faroese, Danish, and English. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2005.[1]

Career

Early Career and Theatre

After graduating, Jóhannes worked extensively in Icelandic theatre, including as a resident artist at the National Theatre of Iceland. He also performed in various musical theatre productions, including Les Misérables, Little Shop of Horrors, Hair, Grease, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He made his on-screen debut in the Icelandic film Reykjavík-Rotterdam in 2008.

International Breakthrough

His first international film role was as Cain in Darren Aronofsky's Noah (2014). He gained wider recognition with his role as Lem Lemoncloak in the sixth season of Game of Thrones (2016). This was followed by a role as a KGB agent in the action film Atomic Blonde (2017).

In 2018, he played the lead role of Tau in the prehistoric adventure film Alpha. He has since appeared in a range of films, including The Sisters Brothers (2018), The Good Liar (2019), Bloodshot (2020), and Infinite (2021).

Television Success and Recent Work

On television, Jóhannes had a main role in the sci-fi series The Innocents (2018) and a recurring role in Origin (2018). He is also known for starring as Olaf Haraldsson in the Netflix historical drama series Vikings: Valhalla (2022–2023). He has made guest appearances in acclaimed series such as Succession (2023) and The Witcher (2023).

In 2025, he appeared as the villain Copperhead in the Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World. He is also set to appear in the upcoming Masters of the Universe film.

Personal Life

Jóhannes has been married to economist Rósa Björk Sveinsdóttir since 2011, and they have three children. He resides in Reykjavík, Iceland.
