Alfred Nobel (1833–1896) was a Swedish chemist, engineer, and inventor best known for inventing dynamite. Born in Stockholm, he came from a family of engineers and developed an early interest in science and technology. Over his lifetime, Nobel held more than 350 patents and built a global business empire[1].

Despite his success, Nobel was deeply concerned about the destructive use of his inventions in warfare. In his will, he left the majority of his fortune to establish the Nobel Prizes, which are awarded annually for outstanding contributions in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, and they continue to honor excellence and benefit humanity to this day.

Alfred Nobel’s most famous invention was dynamite, created in 1867. Unlike unstable nitroglycerin, dynamite was safer to handle and quickly became widely used in mining, construction, and transportation projects, such as building tunnels and railways. This invention greatly accelerated industrial development in the 19th century.

However, dynamite was also adapted for military use, which troubled Nobel deeply. His inventions highlighted the dual nature of science and technology: they can advance human progress but also cause destruction if misused.

By establishing the Nobel Prizes, Nobel transformed his personal concern into a lasting legacy. The prizes encourage discoveries, creativity, and efforts that benefit humanity, balancing his reputation as the inventor of explosives with his vision for peace and progress.
