Early Life and Education
Howard was born into a Jewish family. He showed an early aptitude for chess, becoming a highly ranked junior player, which some associates believe honed his strategic and risk-assessment skills for his future career in finance. He studied Actuarial Science at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
Career
Early Career:
Howard began his career in the City of London in the mid-1980s. He worked as a proprietary bond trader at Salomon Brothers and later at Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB). It was at CSFB that he worked alongside traders who would later become his partners at Brevan Howard.[1]
Brevan Howard:
In 2002, Howard co-founded Brevan Howard with four other traders from CSFB: Chris Rokos, James Vernon, Trifon Natsis, and Diego Megia. The firm started with approximately $400 million in capital. Howard was appointed Senior Partner and Chief Executive Officer, roles he held for many years.
Under his leadership, Brevan Howard's flagship Master Fund became renowned for its aggressive and successful global macro strategies, which involve betting on macroeconomic trends by trading interest rates, government bonds, currencies, and futures. The firm's reputation was cemented during the 2007-2008 global financial crisis, when its flagship fund generated massive returns by correctly anticipating the market turmoil, reportedly earning over $7 billion for its investors in 2008 alone.
At its peak, Brevan Howard managed over $40 billion in assets, making it a dominant force in the hedge fund industry. Howard personally managed a significant portion of the firm's capital and was responsible for a large share of its profits.
Later Career and AH Capital Management:
After stepping back from day-to-day management at Brevan Howard in the late 2010s, Howard shifted his focus to his family office, AH Capital Management LLP (also known as the Alan Howard Foundation). Through this vehicle, he has made significant personal investments, particularly in the digital asset and cryptocurrency space. He has been an early backer of numerous crypto ventures, exchanges (e.g., Bitstamp), and blockchain technology firms.
He also co-founded Elwood Technologies, a technology platform providing institutional-grade access to digital asset markets, and has invested in other financial technology companies. Howard remains a limited partner and shareholder in Brevan Howard.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Alan Howard is notoriously private and rarely gives interviews or makes public appearances. He is married to fashion designer Sabine Howard. The couple are known for their substantial philanthropic contributions, particularly in the fields of medical research, education, and Jewish causes. Their donations have supported institutions such as the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and Imperial College London.
He holds residences in London, Switzerland, and Israel, and has been involved in high-profile real estate purchases.
Net Worth
According to Forbes, Alan Howard's net worth was estimated at $3.2 billion as of 2023. His wealth is derived primarily from his earnings from Brevan Howard and his personal investment portfolio.
