天體物理學家。1964年1月生於浙江省紹興市，籍貫浙江慈谿。1984年畢業於浙江大學物理系，1991年和1992年在意大利高等研究生院分別獲碩士和博士學位。2015年當選中國科學院院士。上海交通大學教授。
長期從事宇宙結構和星系形成的數值模擬、理論研究和觀測分析。在數值模擬方面，自主建立了一套針對宇宙高密度區域的多層網格、自適應P3M方法，開展國際領先的宇宙學數值模擬。在理論研究方面，提出描述暗物質內部結構的三軸橢球模型，被觀測證實，已被廣泛應用於宇宙結構的觀測和理論研究。在觀測分析方面，提出暗暈占有數模型方法，並首次應用於星系巡天，建立了星系與暗物質分布之間的關係，增進了對宇宙暗物質結構的認識，該方法已成為測量星系周圍暗物質分布的標準方法。曾獲國家自然科學二等獎、上海市自然科學一等獎（兩次）等。

1984年畢業於浙江大學物理系。

1993-1994年在美國亞利桑那大學做博士後研究。
1994-1996年在德國馬普天體物理研究所做博士後研究。
1996年11月-1999年8月在日本東京大學做高級訪問學者。
1998年入選中國科學院「百人計劃」。
2000年回國組建上海天文台德國馬普青年夥伴小組。
2001年獲國家傑出青年科學基金、中科院青年科學家獎。
2003年獲全國留學回國人員先進個人和成就獎、上海市優秀留學回國人員獎。
2004年獲上海市科學技術進步一等獎（獨立完成人）、國家973計劃先進個人稱號，入選首批「新世紀百千萬人才工程」國家級人選，享受政府特殊津貼，上海市優秀留學回國人才稱號。
2005年獲國家自然科學二等獎（獨立完成人）、第九屆上海市十大科技精英。
2006年獲第九屆中國青年科技獎。
2007年當選2004—2006年度上海市勞動模範。
2009年獲第七屆上海市自然科學牡丹獎、再次獲上海市科學技術進步一等獎（第一完成人）。
2012年加盟上海交通大學物理與天文系。
2015年當選中國科學院院士。
