人物经历
1978年至1982年，就读于北京大学西语系英语专业，获学士学位。
1982年至1987年，赴英国爱丁堡大学英语语言文学专业留学，获博士学位。
1987.12-1989.8 北京大学英语系讲师。
1989.8-1992.8 北京大学英语系副教授。
1992.8 北京大学教授(破格)。
1993.11- 北京大学博士生导师;
2005.2 入选教育部"长江学者特聘教授"(人文社科类首批)。

2016年4月14日，北京大学召开学部主任座谈会和人文学部、信息与工程科学部、理学部换届会。 曾任九三学社第十、十一届中央委员会委员。第九届,第十届，第十一届全国人大代表，北京市第十、十一、十二届人大常委。第八届全国青联委员，第九届全国青联常委。
2016年4月14日，北京大学召开学部主任座谈会和人文学部、信息与工程科学部、理学部换届会。14日上午，林建华校长与各学部现任及往届主任、副主任进行座谈，听取关于学部建设发展的意见。座谈会后，人文学部、信息与工程科学部、理学部换届会分别召开，校领导、各学部新老班子成员、相关院系及职能部门负责人参加会议。会上，林建华向上一届主任班子颁发感谢函，并向新一届主任班子颁发聘书，聘任申丹为人文学部主任，阎步克、张旭东、李四龙为人文学部副主任;聘任高文为信息与工程科学部主任，张远航、任秋实为信息与工程科学部副主任;聘任饶毅为理学部主任，方精云、吴凯、沈波为理学部副主任。上一届主任班子成员对学部建设调整表示大力支持，对各学部发展提出殷切希望。新一届主任班子成员表达了将不负众望做好学部工作的决心和信心。[2] 2018年5月2日，中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平来到北京大学考察。考察期间，习近平看望邓小南、王缉思、林毅夫、钱乘旦、申丹、杜维明、安乐哲等资深老教授，并同他们亲切交谈。
