在[[英語世界]]使用“Australia”這個名稱的最早記錄是在1625年的印刷物上。但直到18世紀末期前，這個名稱是泛指整個南太平洋地區而非特指澳大利亞。 1817年，澳大利亞這個名稱第一次出現在官方文件上，當時的新南威爾士州州總督[[拉克倫·麥覺理]]批准了此一名稱，並建議當時殖民政府正式使用此詞。到1824年，海軍也正式認可了此名稱。
