全線為[[大都市近郊區間|大阪近郊區間]]及{{link-ja|電車特定區間|電車特定区間}}。{{link-ja|日本鐵道路線顏色列表|日本鉄道路線色一覧|路線色}}是橙色，給予人「陽光充滿大地的形象」。過去曾為阪和電氣鐵道、[[南海電氣鐵道]]所有，[[二戰]]期間的1944年被[[戰時收購私鐵|國有化]]。原本僅做為大阪府與和歌山縣之間的主要連絡路線，自1994年[[關西國際機場]]啟用以來，是前往該機場的重要路線之一。

== 运行形态 ==
白天每小时列车的数量是：天王寺站-凤站间有4列普通列车，天王寺站-日根野站间4列区间快速。日根野车站-和歌山站间的是特急优先，所以列車在日根野站及和泉砂川站要避让特急和纪州路快速。
除阪和线内运行的列车外，[[大阪环状线]]、[[关西空港线]]、[[纪势本线]]和[[梅田货物线]]直通运行的列车都在本线运行。2008年3月15日的时刻表修改后，[[关西本线]]（大和路线）JR难波站始发的列车也直通至本线运行。（現已取消直通往JR難波站列車）
天王寺站站内，大和路线和平面交叉单线前往阪和线的小段复线化工程一度进行，2008年3月15日的时刻表改正後开通使用。在白天，天王寺站-和歌山站间的快速和JR难波站始发的关西机场快速，大阪环状线直通的关空快速、纪州路快速整合運作，这个时间段的关西机场快速、纪州路快速每小时3趟列车（2011年3月12日增加為4趟）。这次的复线化，減少了关西本线及阪和線的时刻表混乱現象。同时，早上上班高峰期，大阪环状线直通班次均於環狀線內各站停車。全部的天王寺站-日根野站區間都是8辆编成的快速列車大幅增加；列车載客量也大幅增加，所以[[南海本线]]一度被搶走一定的客量。但是在2011年3月12日的时刻表修改后，白天时凤站-日根野站间就只有关西、纪州路快速4列+区间快速（该区间各站停车）4列了，因此这一区间运行班次和南海线运输能力相差不大。

== 运行形态 ==
白天每小时列车的数量是：天王寺站-凤站间有4列普通列车，天王寺站-日根野站间4列区间快速。日根野车站-和歌山站间的是特急优先，所以列車在日根野站及和泉砂川站要避让特急和纪州路快速。
除阪和线内运行的列车外，[[大阪环状线]]、[[关西空港线]]、[[纪势本线]]和[[梅田货物线]]直通运行的列车都在本线运行。2008年3月15日的时刻表修改后，[[关西本线]]（大和路线）JR难波站始发的列车也直通至本线运行。（現已取消直通往JR難波站列車）
天王寺站站内，大和路线和平面交叉单线前往阪和线的小段复线化工程一度进行，2008年3月15日的时刻表改正後开通使用。在白天，天王寺站-和歌山站间的快速和JR难波站始发的关西机场快速，大阪环状线直通的关空快速、纪州路快速整合運作，这个时间段的关西机场快速、纪州路快速每小时3趟列车（2011年3月12日增加為4趟）。这次的复线化，減少了关西本线及阪和線的时刻表混乱現象。同时，早上上班高峰期，大阪环状线直通班次均於環狀線內各站停車。全部的天王寺站-日根野站區間都是8辆编成的快速列車大幅增加；列车載客量也大幅增加，所以[[南海本线]]一度被搶走一定的客量。但是在2011年3月12日的时刻表修改后，白天时凤站-日根野站间就只有关西、纪州路快速4列+区间快速（该区间各站停车）4列了，因此这一区间运行班次和南海线运输能力相差不大。
