费格逊结束其球员生涯后，先后出任东斯特灵和圣米伦两队[[主教练]]，在1978年遭[[圣米伦足球俱乐部|圣米伦]]辞退。革职后的他很快找到新东家，出任阿伯丁主教练长达8年时间，共3次夺取联赛锦标、5次盃赛锦标和2次欧洲赛锦标，同时亦短暂担任苏格兰国家队教练。1986年他被挖角至曼联出任领队一职。
