蜗鸢是福寿螺的天敌，引进它们可以有效的控制福寿螺的数量。福寿螺分布于南北半球、热带及亚热带地区之淡水或半淡咸水中，即湖沼、池塘、沟渠等静水水域。栖息于10-100厘米水深之边缘地带，适当的水温为25-30 ℃之间。原产地亚马逊河流域，在当地因为有鹰隼类为其天敌，因此危害不明显。1981年由一位巴西籍中国人引入到广东，1984年前后，已在该省作为特种经济作物广为养殖，后又被引入到其他省份养殖。福寿螺虽然好吃，却给中国、日本等亚洲国家的水稻种植造成相当大的危害。福寿螺已经被中国国家环保总局列为16种“危害最大的外来物种”之一。在中国主要分布在广东、广西、云南、福建、浙江、海南、四川、重庆、台湾等省市。
