抗日战争期间，和弟弟[[芮效俭]]跟随在金陵大学哲学系教书的父亲[[芮陶庵]]，前美国长老会传教士，搬到大西南的成都[[华西大学]]。虽然没有上过正式学校，但是他父亲平时会教授诗歌，还从成都当地学校的教师得到其他学科的指导。抗日战争胜利后，报考[[美童公学]]，在参与十年级几何考试的当天，中共军队也到达了上海。其他学生纷纷退学只剩下16人，父母却坚定决定留下来。母亲安排一位曾经帮助[[赛珍珠]]的老先生Zhao Yanan教授两兄弟中文。弟弟是[[芮效俭]](J.StapletonRoy) 1935年出生于中国南京，是美国1991年至1995年的驻华大使。
芮效卫1950年返回美国，和[[费城]]的叔叔阿姨住在一起。后来[[宾夕法尼亚大学]]汉学家[[卜德]]接受了他成为门下生并推荐申请[[哈佛大学]]。中途被迫退学选择参加[[朝鲜战争]]，被派往日本和台湾，通过抄写同事的手写稿中文水平得到进一步提高。战后回到哈佛继续完成学业。1967年担任[[芝加哥大学]]东亚语言和文明教授。
他为了能把全书译完，决定提早退休，全力攻关，终于在2013年译完最后一卷(第5卷)，而成为美国汉学界的盛事，11月19日《纽约时报》艺文版以半版篇幅专访芮效卫。芮效卫最知名的是《金瓶梅》的英文翻译，1993年完成第一本译本，由 [[普林斯顿大学出版社]]出版。
遗憾的是，芮氏大功告成之后，却传出他患了[[肌肉萎缩症]]](俗称“[[渐冻人]]”，30年代洋基一垒手陆‧加列格患有此症，故又称陆‧加列格症)的坏消息。但他认为已打赢了英译《金瓶梅》这一场漫长的战争，他已无憾。2012完成最后一本，但不幸被检测出[[肌肉萎缩症]]。2016年5月31日在美国逝世。
