出生於[[東京都]]，畢業於[[成蹊中學校・高等學校|成蹊高校]]後1953年取得獎學金前往美國留學，1957年畢業於[[哈弗福德學院]]，1961年再從[[哈佛大學]]取得歷史學博士。
1961年起擔任[[哈佛大学]]講師、[[加利福尼亞大學聖塔克魯茲分校]]助理教授，1968年成為[[羅徹斯特大學]]助理教授、1969年成為[[芝加哥大學]]歷史系助理教授、1971年同教授、1989年成為[[哈佛大學]]歷史系教授和系主任、期間也曾擔任[[早稻田大學]]、[[立命館大学]]、[[關西大學]]的客席教授。2005年獲得[[瑞寶章]]，也曾因為研究成果獲得[[吉野作造獎]]以及[[吉田茂獎]]。
1960年代起，與[[高坂正堯]]、[[永井陽之助]]等[[現實主義]]派學者共同活躍在『[[中央公論]]』雜誌的国際政治評論版上。外交史学者であるが『日本の外交』（1966年）などに見られるように、思想・文化の影響力を重視するアプローチが特色であり、一国の外交史研究を超えた多国間の視点とその相互作用を組み込む「国際史（International History）」研究の提唱や、文化交流の国際政治の研究の必要を長く提唱していることでも知られる。
