[[第二次世界大战|二战]]之后，在[[苏联]]和[[盟军]]同时施加的压力之下，[[德国]]被分裂成立两部分——[[柏林墙]]把德国分成了[[德意志民主共和国|东德]]和[[西德]]，而前者在苏联的控制之下。在1963年6月26日，肯尼迪访问了[[西柏林]]并做了一次公开批评[[共产主义]]的演讲。肯尼迪把柏林墙的建成当成了一个共产主义失败的例子：“[[自由]]十分不易，[[民主]]也并不完美，但是我们从没有把我们的人民用墙围起来。”这次演讲因为用到了一句非常有名的短语“'''Ich bin ein Berliner'''”（“'''我是柏林人'''”）而家喻户晓。在肯尼迪说出这句话时有将近六分之五的西柏林市民站在街上聆听。他在日后还补充到：“我们再也不会有像那天的一天了。”
