她以其叙述技巧、机智和独创性而著称。她的小说经常关注哲学的困境，情节构思精细而复杂，人物具有象征意义。《钟》(The Bell)(1958年)是她最知名的作品，书中描写了一个世俗宗教团体的明争暗斗。默多克出生于都柏林，1942年毕业于牛津大学，1987年被授予大英帝国女勋爵头衔。她一生创作颇丰,有二十五部小说、六个剧本、一册诗集及五部哲学著作问世。由其夫[[约翰·贝雷]](John Bayley)的回忆录《挽歌献爱妻》改编而成的电影《艾丽丝的情书》,在第五十二届柏林电影节上备受追捧,轰动一时。
