蔡炳坤在擔任建中校長的任內，首創「建中成年禮」的活動，在12月31日當天為高一全體學生舉辦典禮，也首創與[[兩廳院]]合作，使學生可憑學生證以較低的價格購票，並首次和[[北一女中]]合辦校慶舞會。2010年，蔡炳坤受[[臺中市]]市長[[胡志強]]任命為臺中市副市長。
