2015年8月7-14日，“[[国际纯粹与应用化学联合会]](IUPAC)”第45届学术大会(Congress)暨第48届全体代表大会(General Assembly)在韩国釜山举行。北京大学周其凤院士经IUPAC理事会选举当选副主席，将于2016年1月1日起就任，并将于2018年1月接任主席职务。这是自1919年IUPAC在法国成立近百年以来中国化学家首次担任该组织的领导职务。
