1978年10月至1982年9月,中国天津大学土建系结构工程(工业与民用建筑)专业,获工学士学位。

1982年10月至1983年9月,出国预备研究生,大连外国语学院完成日语培训。

1983年10月至1989年3月,日本九州大学工学部建筑工学科,1986年3月获工学硕士学位,1989年3月获工学博士学位。1989年3月获日本九州大学工学博士学位。

1989年3月至1990年3月,在日本东京青木建设株式会社研究所工作。

1990年3月至1992年3月,在美国加州大学圣迭哥校从事博士后研究工作。

1992年3月至1994年5月,美国加州大学圣迭哥校,研究员(Research Scientist)并兼任讲师。

1994年6月获美国职业注册土木工程师执照, 同时被评为博士生导师。

1994年6月起,受聘于美国南加州大学土木系,历任助理教授 (Assistant Professor)、副教授(Associate Professor)并获终身教职。担任系试验室主任和工程与抗震研究中心主任。

2001年10月起,任教育部长江学者、湖南大学特聘教授。从事围绕基于性能的抗震设计、高性能新材料的结构应用等综合研究。

2005年1月起,受聘为"985工程""现代结构与桥梁科技创新平台"首席科学家。

2006年5月起,任湖南大学土木工程学院院长。

2008年,受聘为中组部"千人计划"学者。

2015年5月聘任为南京工业大学土木工程学院院长 。
