霍华德给人的第一印象就是惊人的身体素质，能够让他亲吻篮筐的弹跳，能够让他在禁区内横行的力量，还有超长的臂展和瓦斯爆炸般的爆发力，他用一个个爆扣和摘篮板如无物的表现告诉人们他就是禁区内的独一无二的掌控者。霍华德赛场上的统治表现给他赢得了“魔兽”的绰号。而赛场外的霍华德和霭可亲，搞怪逗乐，也被大家称为“大男孩”，霍华德有与不少中锋球员共通的缺点，射程范围、失误次数以及罚球的命中率（网易评）。
