出生於[[劍橋]]，父親為[[劍橋大學]]教授。弟弟為 [[ 英國 ]] 知名生 [[ 物學家 ]] 及BBC節目主持人[[戴維·阿滕伯勒|大卫·艾登堡祿]]。二次大戰時他曾服役於[[英國皇家空軍]]，退役後投身演藝事業。
