史前時期先後有[[利古利亞人]]、[[腓尼基人]]和[[迦太基人]]在此居住。
公元前6世紀，[[希臘]]的福基斯人於此建立神廟以紀念[[海力克斯]](Hercules)(傳說曾經途經此地)，並命名為摩諾伊科(Monoikos)，[[希臘語]]Monokos，意為「單」或「一個」，源於神廟中只供奉一位神祇；一說海力克斯堅持只與他的追隨者一起生活。
