马蹄寺北寺石窟是马蹄寺石窟群的经典，使凿于东晋时期，其中，“三十三天”石窟是马蹄寺石窟群的标志性建筑，由7层21窟组成，呈宝塔型开凿于百米高的岩壁上，内供奉绿度母菩萨；藏佛殿是国内现存最大的石窟之一；马蹄寺内存有天马神迹，马蹄寺因此而得名。
